Car Aircon Regas and Repair in Pretoria

Car aircon not cold any more? We find out why before we refill it, so a regas is not a fix that fades within weeks. Aircon regas, leak checks and repairs at our Wonderboom South workshop, close to Pretoria North and Gezina.

How it works

Why a car aircon stops cooling

Your car's aircon pumps refrigerant gas around a sealed loop. The compressor squeezes the gas, the condenser in front of the radiator sheds the heat, and the evaporator behind the dashboard draws heat out of the cabin air. When any part of that loop leaks, blocks or stops working, the air from the vents gets warmer.

Refrigerant is not used up like fuel. If the system is low, the gas has gone somewhere, usually through a tired seal, hose or component. Refilling a leaking system simply lets the new gas escape the same way, which is why every aircon job we do starts with finding out where it went.

Symptoms

Signs your car aircon needs attention

Blowing warm or barely cool

The most common complaint. Often low refrigerant from a leak, but a faulty compressor, fan or control can do the same.

Takes ages to cool down

If the cabin only gets comfortable at the end of a trip, the system is likely working below its normal capacity.

Musty or damp smell

A smell when the aircon switches on often comes from moisture and build-up around the evaporator, or a dirty cabin filter.

Noise when the aircon is on

A rattle, squeal or grinding that starts with the aircon can point to the compressor, its clutch or the drive belt.

Oily marks on pipes or fittings

Water dripping under the car is normal condensation. An oily residue on aircon pipes or joints can point to a leak.

Regas or repair?

Regas versus repair: what your aircon actually needs

A regas means recovering what is left in the system and refilling it with the correct amount of refrigerant for your vehicle. On a system that is sealed and working, that can bring the cooling back. It does not fix a leak, a failed compressor or an electrical fault.

An aircon repair deals with the cause. Depending on what we find, that can mean replacing a seal, hose or pipe, attending to the condenser or compressor, or tracing an electrical fault in the cooling fan or controls. Once the fault is fixed, the system is regassed and tested.

What we check

  • Pipes, seals and components for leaks
  • Compressor and compressor clutch operation
  • Condenser condition and cooling fans
  • Vent temperature and system pressures
  • Electrical controls, switches and wiring
  • Cabin filter condition

How often should a car aircon be regassed? There is no single rule that suits every car. A healthy, sealed system should hold its charge for a long time, so an aircon that keeps needing gas has a leak worth finding.

Our process

How we handle aircon regas and repair

Test, find the cause, quote, then fix it properly.

  1. Tell us the symptom

Call or WhatsApp us with your make, model and year and what the aircon is doing, whether that is warm air, a smell or a noise.

  2. Test the system

We measure vent temperature and system pressures and check that the compressor and cooling fans are working as they should.

  3. Find the leak or fault

We check pipes, seals and components for leaks, and trace any electrical fault in the controls.

  4. Explain and quote

We explain what we found and whether a regas alone will do or a repair is needed, then quote before any work starts.

  5. Repair, regas and retest

We carry out the agreed repair, regas the system with the correct amount of refrigerant and retest it before the car goes back to you.

Questions

Car aircon FAQs

How much does an aircon regas cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the type and amount of refrigerant it uses, and whether a leak or faulty part needs repairing first. We test the system and quote after inspection, before any work starts.

Why is my car aircon blowing warm air?

The most common cause is low refrigerant from a leak. A faulty compressor, cooling fan, blocked condenser or electrical fault can also stop the system cooling. A proper test shows which one it is.

How often should I regas my car aircon?

There is no single interval for every car. A sealed system in good condition should keep its charge, so needing regular regassing usually means there is a leak that should be repaired.

Can you repair an aircon leak?

Yes. We check the pipes, seals and components to find where the refrigerant is escaping, explain what needs replacing and quote before we repair it. The system is then regassed and tested.

Why does my car aircon smell musty?

A musty smell usually comes from moisture and build-up around the evaporator, or a dirty cabin filter. Mention it when you book and we will check it along with the rest of the system.

Which areas do you serve?

We do aircon regas and repairs for drivers from Pretoria North, Wonderboom South, Gezina, Silverton, Akasia, Montana and Waverley, at 880 Steve Biko Road in Wonderboom South.
