Electric power steering — Wonderboom South
Steering warning light on, or has the wheel suddenly gone heavy? For electric steering rack repair, Pretoria drivers bring their cars to our Wonderboom South workshop, where we test the rack and tell you honestly whether it can be repaired before you pay for a new one.
How it works
Most modern cars use an electric motor on the rack or column, not a hydraulic pump, to help you steer. A torque sensor feels how hard you turn, an angle sensor reports where the wheel points, and a control unit decides how much help to give.
A worn sensor, tired motor or faulty control unit can switch the assistance off completely, but an electric steering fault does not automatically mean a new rack. In many cases EPS steering rack repair is possible: we fix the faulty component and the rest of the rack goes back into service. It sits alongside the other work on our services page.
Symptoms
You do not need to know what has failed. Tell us what you are noticing, or read why steering suddenly goes heavy.
The system has logged a fault. The car may still steer normally for now.
The wheel feels like an old bakkie without power steering, often at parking speeds. Usually the system has switched assistance off to protect itself.
Light one moment, heavy the next, often a sensor, connection or motor fault.
If the wheel sits crooked after suspension, alignment or steering work, the system may need steering angle sensor calibration.
Messages such as "steering assist reduced" come with stored fault codes that we can read.
A knock through the wheel when turning can come from worn parts inside the rack, not only the electronics.
The car wanders on a straight road. Alignment is the first check, but a torque sensor fault can feel the same.

We diagnose first and quote second.
We remove the rack and check it for wear, damaged boots and connectors, and play.
We connect the rack to our specialist diagnostic computer on the bench. We read stored faults and live data from the motor and sensors. This steering rack diagnostics step shows the real cause, not just the symptom.
Our diagnostic equipment loads the rack as if it were steering a car, so we see how the sensors and motor behave while working.
We explain whether repair or replacement makes more sense. Where steering rack reconditioning is the right call, we replace only the components that have failed.
We calibrate the rack and carry out steering rack programming and coding to suit your vehicle, then retest on the bench, refit and check it on the car.
Calibration
An electric steering rack only works properly when it knows exactly where the wheel is and how hard you are turning it. After a sensor, motor or control unit is replaced, the system has to re-learn those positions. Skip that step and the car cannot read the wheel position correctly: the warning light may stay on, assistance can feel uneven, and safety systems that rely on the steering angle may misbehave.
That is why steering rack calibration is part of every electric steering job we do, not an optional extra. Without it, a healthy rack can still seem faulty.
Vehicles
We work on electric power steering across a wide range of hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and bakkies. Racks differ between models and production years, so the quickest way to know is to ask.
Send us your make, model and year and we will confirm before you bring the car in.

Questions
It is a steering rack with an electric motor, sensors and a small control unit attached. Instead of a hydraulic pump, the motor helps you turn the wheel, and the sensors tell it how much help you need and where the wheel is pointing.
Often, yes. Many faults come from a single sensor, the motor or the control unit, and those can be repaired or replaced on their own. We diagnose the rack first and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your car.
After a sensor, motor or control unit is replaced, the steering has to re-learn its centre point and limits. Without calibration the car cannot read the wheel position correctly, so the warning light may stay on or the assistance may feel wrong.
The car may still steer, but the light means the system has found a fault, so have it checked promptly. If the steering suddenly becomes very heavy while you are driving, slow down, stop somewhere safe and give us a call.
It depends on the fault and on whether parts need to be sourced. Once we have diagnosed the rack, we give you an estimate of the time involved before any work starts.
We work on many makes and models with electric power steering. Call or WhatsApp us with your make, model and year and we will confirm before you book the car in.
