Engine Repair and Replacement in Pretoria

Warning light, smoke, overheating or a knock that was not there last week? We diagnose the engine first, then tell you honestly whether it needs a repair, an overhaul or a replacement, before any work starts at our Wonderboom South workshop.

Diagnose first

Why the diagnosis comes before the quote

Engine trouble is the kind of problem that tempts a workshop to guess big. A misfire can be a spark plug or a cylinder head; a knock can be a loose heat shield or a worn bearing. The difference in cost between those answers is enormous, which is why we diagnose before we dismantle.

We start with a scan using our diagnostic equipment, then listen to the engine, look for leaks and run pressure or compression tests where needed. For engine repair in Pretoria, that approach has served our customers since 1979, on petrol and diesel engines alike.

Symptoms

Signs your engine needs attention

Overheating

A temperature gauge climbing towards red, or steam from under the bonnet. Pull over and switch off; driving on can turn a cooling fault into engine damage.

Smoke from the exhaust

Blue smoke often means burning oil, persistent white smoke can mean coolant, and black smoke usually means too much fuel.

Loss of power

The car struggles on hills, hesitates under load or idles roughly. Causes range from a sensor to worn internal parts.

Knocking or ticking

A new metallic noise that rises with engine speed should be checked early, before it becomes a serious failure.

Oil leaks or low oil

Drips under the car, a burning smell, or an engine that needs regular top-ups.

Engine warning light

A light that stays on or keeps coming back has stored a fault code. Reading it is the first step, not the last.

Your options

Repair, overhaul or replace: an honest comparison

Once we know what has failed, there are usually three routes. The right one depends on the damage, the value of the car and how long you plan to keep it.

Repair

Fixing the specific fault: a sensor, gasket, water pump or worn engine mounting, which often shows up as a clunk when pulling away. This is the right answer whenever the rest of the engine is healthy.

Overhaul or rebuild

Stripping the engine and renewing the worn internal parts. It suits an engine that is worn or damaged inside but still has a sound block and head worth keeping.

Replacement

Fitting another engine when the original is beyond economical repair. We explain the options available for your vehicle and why we think replacement makes sense, if it does.

We will not push you towards the biggest job. If a repair will do, we say so, and if the engine is past saving, we explain why.

Our process

How we handle engine repairs

A clear diagnosis, a written quote and no surprises at collection.

  1. Listen and scan

We hear the symptom for ourselves where it is safe to do so, and read stored fault codes and live engine data.

  2. Test and inspect

Leak checks, pressure tests and compression tests as needed, so we know the condition inside the engine, not just the warning on the dash.

  3. Explain and quote

We explain in plain language what we found and whether repair, overhaul or replacement makes sense, then quote before any work starts.

  4. Carry out the work

Once you approve the quote, we repair, rebuild or replace as agreed, and phone you first if anything changes along the way.

  5. Test and hand over

We run the engine, recheck for leaks and faults, road test the car and talk you through anything to watch for.

Questions

Engine repair FAQs

How much does an engine rebuild cost in South Africa?

It depends on the engine, the damage inside it, the parts required and the labour involved, so there is no fixed price. We diagnose the engine first and quote after inspection, before any work starts.

Is it better to repair or replace an engine?

If the fault is limited to one part and the rest of the engine is healthy, a repair is usually the sensible choice. An overhaul or replacement makes more sense when the engine is badly worn or damaged inside. We explain the options for your car after diagnosis.

Can you fix an overheating engine?

Yes. We find out why it is overheating, whether that is coolant loss, the thermostat, the radiator, a fan or something more serious, and check whether the heat has caused further damage. Stopping as soon as the gauge climbs helps limit that damage.

How long will my car be off the road?

It depends on the fault, the work required and whether parts need to be sourced. After diagnosis we give you an estimate of the time involved before any work starts.

Do you work on diesel engines?

Yes. We diagnose and repair both petrol and diesel engines, from a warning light that will not clear to a full overhaul.

Which areas do you serve?

Engine work comes to our Wonderboom South workshop from Pretoria North, Wonderboom South, Gezina, Silverton, Akasia, Montana and Waverley. If you are elsewhere in Pretoria, give us a call.
